2019 HONDA PILOT Safety Overview

"Left home driving 5 min down the road the car suddenly started hiccuping as to power I almost wrecked it recovered but started again …was a prime example of that fuel pump issue …i turned around drove home barely made it going slow …smelling a low grade sweetish burning smell…made it home checked and found this recall online of the fuel pump issue…called dealership asked to get this fixed they told me I had to get it there they would not provide a tow and the recall issue has made it unsafe to drive…the problem is their fault and now I am expected to to pay 200 to get there…they should tow and fix… they also would not cover a loaner I’m out transportation for days and this has caused all sorts of issues as I have to get to work etc…"

"My 2019 Honda Pilot EX-L (perfectly maintained and with only 72K miles) just started displaying a "Braking System" failure warning light along with dash notifications that a number of critical safety systems are no longer functioning, including: forward collision warning, automatic emergency breaking, lane keeping assistance and departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and more. The car registers a failure code of "U3000-49" which I've learned is related to a bad front camera - a problem apparently plaguing so many Honda vehicles like mine that there is now a class action lawsuit (Jones, et al. v. American Honda Motor Co., Inc.) related to it. Given the lawsuit shows how pervasive this situation is, and the nature of the safety risks involved, I hope this issue will be elevated to a formal NHTSA Safety Recall along with reimbursement for repair expenses (mine will be about $1500)."

When I started the vehicle, multiple warning lights remain on, including the LKAS, ACC, CMBS, and Brake System warnings. I haven't had it inspected by the dealer yet, as the closest dealer is 25 miles away down a curvy mountain road. I expect that it will be determined that the front-facing camera has failed. Because this camera supports several driver-assistance and warning systems, the failure has made those systems unreliable and prevents the vehicle from accurately alerting me to other potential problems. This creates a significant safety concern because, if another malfunction occurs, I may not be able to distinguish it from the existing warnings. The warning lights remain active unless the camera is replaced at an estimated cost of $2,600. I do not believe owners should be responsible for such an expensive repair when the failure affects critical safety and warning functions. "Fuel started to pour from under the vehicle above the gas tank. The seal on the fuel pump was causing this when the vehicle was turned on. The fuel pump was on recall for this failure and the vehicle was towed to the Honda AutoNation Dealership in Mobile, AL. While there the franchise dealership executed Safety Recall 21-034 on my 2019 Honda Pilot; the fuel pump. The technician then sent us a video saying the fuel pump did not fix the problem as a rodent had chewed through the fuel line near the fuel pump above the gas tank. He did not show an image of this damage nor produce evidence of rodents. During the repair, the technician mechanically damaged the high-pressure fuel line. The line subsequently continues to leak gas under pressure, creating an immediate engine fire hazard. The dealer then falsified paperwork blaming rodents to escape liability. This is evident by the crescent shaped slice through the fuel line. I have video proof showing the difference in fuel leaks from the pump and then from the sliced fuel line."

"I am submitting this complaint regarding a fuel injector failure and emissions system malfunction in my 2019 Honda Pilot. At the time of the failure, the vehicle had approximately 94,693 miles and had been routinely maintained. On [XXX], while traveling from Ohio to Pennsylvania with my family, the vehicle displayed an "Emission System Problem" warning and illuminated the check engine light. The vehicle was diagnosed by Faulkner Honda in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The dealership found DTC P0430 (Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold) and performed an air/fuel ratio test. According to the dealership, four of the six cylinders were running rich due to excessive fuel delivery. The dealership recommended replacement of the fuel injectors, and all six fuel injectors were replaced. The injector repair cost approximately $1,100. The dealership advised that possible causes included internal fuel injector failure or carbon buildup but could not provide a definitive explanation for the failure. Neither the dealership nor Honda could explain why my vehicle was excluded from Honda's fuel injector warranty extension despite exhibiting the same symptoms and requiring the same repair associated with that program. I was advised that the warranty extension applies only to certain VINs produced during specific manufacturing periods and facilities. Honda issued a warranty extension for the 2019 Honda Pilot fuel injectors under Service Bulletin 20-100. ​Warranty Coverage Details ​Expiration Point: The warranty is extended to 10 years from the original date of purchase or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first. ​Condition: The vehicle must display a Malfunction Indicator Light (Check Engine Light) with specific stored fuel-system error codes (such as P0300 through P0306, P0420, P0430, P219A, or P219B). ​How to Get Coverage or File a Claim ​1. If Your Vehicle Needs Repair Now ​Take your vehicle to an authorized Honda dealership. They will scan the diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). The parts kit for repair is $479.00 dollars and labor quoted was $895.00. I simply cant afford this vital repair as its also causing safety issues and business loss as a delivery and rishare driver. I ask that you approve the warranty repairs to be provided to Hinderer Honda ASAP please. "I took my car in for an oil change into the dealership on 5/22. I was told that the timing belt would need to be replaced once I hit 100K miles. Two weeks later, I noticed my car rattling, I scheduled an appointment for Monday (the earliest I could get it into the dealer), on Saturday, the car wouldn't accelerate past 64mph, as I was getting on the highway, I pressed the gas and got it to 70mph. The engine light kicked on and the car started talking to me that the car was overheating and that I needed to pull over for 10-15 minutes. I did so and when I tried to start it, nothing happened. I then jumped it, got it started and it wouldn't accelerate past 12mph. I turned it off and had it towed to Honda. There, the mechanic told me that the rod had broken in the engine. I asked if it was the timing belt and he said "No, unfortunately, there is nothing you could've done to prevent this". To answer your questions: What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request?- The engine How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk?- Yes, I was on the HWY with kids Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center?- Dealer Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others?- I reached out to the manufacturer and was told they're not mechanics. It was towed to the Honda Dealership where I bought it. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear?- No. I noticed the rattling, scheduled and appointment and two days later the engine light came on as I previously stated."

At apparently random intervals, I'll get the following faults on start: Adaptive Cruise Control Problem Lane Keeping Assist Problem Collision Mitigation System Problem Road Departure Mitigation System Problem Auto High-Beam Problem If I drive the car a couple of miles, there's a 50-50 chance I'll get them the next time the car starts. It's not throwing any fault codes. Had the oil changed, battery checked, cleaned the "H" sign to make sure it wasnt anything dirty on the radar."

"When at a complete stop, engine will stop running but AC and radio stay on (sometimes radio dies). I have to toggle between park or drive or neutral to get car to even power completely off, open door to kill electronics, and restart. This has happened in stop and go traffic and at stop lights. This week my car shifted into neutral while stopped at a light and I had to figure out how to power car off and restart, no idea what the magic combo ended up to be as I had a line of cars behind me trying to just get my car to go again."

"Vehicles auto stop/start turned the engine off while at a stop light. When I accelerated on the gas my car would not go. It said to take it was in neutral so it went into neutral on its own. The entire car appeared to have turned all the way off at this point and I was able to restart and drive."

"Many times the rear tailgate fails to open completely or close completely when the button is pressed. This has caused me to bump my head on the partially opened tailgate. The dealer has replaced the tailgate motor but it has not fixed the problem."

"The contact owns a 2019 Honda Pilot. The contact stated while the contact's father was driving at an undisclosed speed, the contact's father noticed an abnormal sound coming from the engine. The check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed with failed rod bearings and a failed engine. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 70,000."

"My engine lights turned on Friday, April 24th and I brought in my vehicle to a local dealership on Monday, April 27th. I was informed it was due to a faulty catalytic converter and it was replaced under warranty. The services was completed on Tuesday, April 29th and took my vehicle home. On May 7th, I turn on my engine and all the engine check lights came on. My car was jerky. I was scheduled to bring in my vehicle on May 12th to a local dealership. On May 13th, I received update that my engine had oil leakage and required a new engine. I believe that my 2019 Honda Pilot is among the thousands of Honda Pilot within the make year that are experiencing engine failure. I need support to replace my engine as I should not be responsible as I continue to maintain maintenance on my vehicle and to experience this engine failure issue."

"The malfunction indictator light came on due to diagnostic trouble code P0430 (front bank catalyst system efficiency below threshold [bank 2]) while driving. The vehicle has 64,240 miles and has had zero symptoms prior to the DTC appearing. This problem is noted in Service Bulletin 21-010 for Honda Pilots year 2017-2019, but my Vin was not included in the "Vin range". I am taking the vehicle in to the dealer for an inspection and diagnostic, but I believe the "Vin range" should be updated to include my vehicle."

The accelerator pedal was depressed; however, the vehicle failed to accelerate as intended. No warning lights were illuminated. The contact stated that the ticking sound was persistent. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed with fuel pump failure. The contact was informed that the fuel pump needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact referenced an unknown recall; however, the VIN was not under recall. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 84,000."

"The vehicle’s A/C system is experiencing a refrigerant leak due to a known issue with the compressor shaft seal. This issue appears to be associated with the transition to the newer R1234yf refrigerant, after which the shaft seal design was not adequately updated, leading to premature seal failure and refrigerant leakage. This is not an isolated case. Similar A/C compressor shaft seal leaks have been widely reported across multiple Honda models, including the Honda Civic, Accord, and CR-V. For several of these models, Honda has acknowledged the defect and issued an extended warranty program covering A/C compressor shaft seal failures. However, for the Honda Pilot, although Honda has issued a service bulletin describing the same shaft seal leak condition and repair procedure, no extended warranty coverage has been provided. The service bulletin for the Pilot describes the same failure mode and repair process as those covered under extended warranty programs for other models, indicating that Honda is aware of the defect and its root cause. Despite this acknowledgment, Pilot owners are required to bear the full cost of repairs, which can be significant, even though the underlying issue is consistent with those already covered in other vehicles. This issue also has potential safety implications. Loss of A/C function can impair the defrosting system, leading to windshield fogging and reduced visibility, especially in humid or cold conditions. Reduced visibility can directly impact driver safety. Given that Honda has already recognized this defect in multiple models and implemented extended warranty coverage, I believe similar coverage should be extended to the Honda Pilot to ensure fair treatment of customers and to address the associated safety concerns. I have attached the extended warranty documentation for the Honda Civic as well as the service bulletin for the Honda Pilot; they describe the same issue and repair procedure."

While researching the problem it appears to be a very common problem with Honda and I'm sure the dealership is not forwarding this information to you. This is a safety issue and I'm sure people are driving around without fixing it because of the cost. The cost to fix this problem should be absorbed by Honda since it is definitely an engineering issue. Fortunately, I had an extended warranty on my car that covered most of the cost."
