2019 HONDA PASSPORT Safety Overview

"There has been multiple times that my 2019 passport has had the “brake” indicator pop up on my dash telling me to brake when there is nothing there I mean like a completely empty road. There has been a handful of times that it has actually stopped my car like slammed the brakes when there is nothing around or a couple times when a car was passing on the other side of the roadway. This has happened multiple times with someone driving behind me and I fear it could cause a crash due to the car randomly braking so hard."

It was diagnosed as an internal failure of multipurpose camera. I have noticed there have been a lot of complaints of this failure. My car doesn’t have that many miles on it and isn’t that old. It seems like a defect in the car."

I HAD THE CAR TOWED AND THE DEALER DOES NOT YET KNOW HOW MUCH ITS GOING TO COST. THEY HAVE HAD IT FOR 3 DAYS NOW AND WONT TELL ME EXACTLY WHAT PART OF THE TRANSMISSION FAILED, HOW IT FAILED, OR WHAT WOULD HAVE CAUSED IT. I WAS ONLY TOLD THEY ARE WAITING TO HEAR FROM PARTS AND ITS GOING TO BE PRICY! FOR SUCH A YOUNG CAR IT SHOULD NOT NEED THE TRANSMISSION REPLACED AT THIS POINT IN ITS LIFE. "I was traveling over HighwayXX headed toward [XXX] , traveling has seen a 50 miles an hour when my 2019 passport Auto braked without me putting my foot on the brake. when this happened, the Car Fish tailed towards the center divide, almost hit the cement divide, and I had to correct my steering four times in order to avoid traffic, or crashing into a forest of mature trees. Because of these multiple corrections that I had to make, I ended up swerving in and out of both lanes and my car was out of control for a significant amount of time. It almost hit the center divide of Highway 17. At one point, I was at 180° angle, almost going the other direction. The auto braking of this vehicle, almost got me killed. "My vehicle has experienced multiple dangerous incidents where it shuts down or shifts into neutral while driving. This has happened on highways, tunnels, busy on-ramps and main streets. The car loses power and requires restarting, which takes about 30 seconds. On a busy highway or street, this is enough time for a serious accident to occur if other vehicles cannot switch lanes on time. This has happened multiple times with my child in the car, and me being currently pregnant. The vehicle has never given me a warning prior. The issue appears to be related to the Auto start/stop system and/or electrical drivetrain controls. the vehicle is unsafe to operate because the driver can forget to disable auto start/stop and the car can suddenly lose power in traffic. There was also a separate incident (in between the multiple incidents above) where I was on the highway, my car accelerated, brakes wouldn't work, and my foot wasn't on the gas. the car then shifted to neutral and the only way I could stop was by shutting it off and moving to the breakdown lane. There have been two repair attempts. The first repair was done in 2024 after the initial loss-of-power incident related to the auto start/stop feature. In this repair, the battery was replaced and I was told a full diagnostic was run and the car was safe to drive. On 11/11/25 the serious incident with acceleration/ loss of brake function on the highway occurred. A full diagnostic was run and the transmission was replaced under warranty. However, a month after the transmission replacement, the loss of power issue returned. It has now been at least 4 incidents since the transmission was changed. I reported this to Honda corporate and received a case number, but despite multiple attempts to receive an update over the past 2 months, I have not been contacted by Honda, and no resolution has been provided. I do not feel safe driving this vehicle and no longer trust further repairs."

On 4/30/25 at 102,298 miles, I got my spark plugs replaced in hopes to resolve excessive cranking/ hard start issues I’ve been having since the recall. To my fault, I should’ve made a bigger complaint on the hard start issues but didn’t think anything of it thinking it’s normal. On 12/30/2025, at 119,186 miles, I went in for a routine maintenance oil change, but replaced my battery based on recommendation also on hopes to resolve excessive cranking issues I’ve been having. On 1/3/2026, my vehicle wouldn’t start when I went out of town. Main reason I took it into service the week before was to make sure I don’t have any issues when I’m out at a foreign place and it did at a sketchy gas station putting my family in danger. On 1/7/2026, my vehicle wouldn’t start again. I took it in to Atlantic Coast Honda on 1/9/26 and they were able to replicate the issue but was told that they couldn’t do anything else. I complained to them that I didn’t feel comfortable driving my family around and also driving to far places for work but was told my vehicle has tested better since it was replicated when I brought it in. On 2/20/26, my vehicle wouldn’t start again. I brought it in on 2/21/26 for them to look at it again. I get a notice on 2/23/26 on the service recommended, and it’s to replace the fuel pump for $1398.71. I told them that I refuse to pay that amount when it was replaced based on a recall, and the part replaced is not even over 100,000 miles. Also the fact that I’ve had issues on starting the vehicle for a while and I’ve committed to replacing the battery twice, changing out the spark plugs in hopes to resolve my vehicle issues. This situation has put me in a bind putting me, my family, and other drivers in danger when I drive a vehicle that might stop working any time."

"Forward collision, Adaptive cruise control and all enhanced safety features related to the camera and front of vehicle sensor stopped working. Vehicle warning lights and messages do light up for every start. Only option has been to have a $2,500 repair bill for a 6 year old vehicle to install a new camera system by the dealer. This a well known manufacturer issue among owners. Infotainment system is losing network connections and completely going black. The system is only available for brief stretches after restarting the vehicle and will go black while driving. There is a known recall for the coaxial cable (MOST connection loss) but apparently my vehicle is not part of this recall. Again this is a well known manufacturer issue with this year and model vehicle. Appears to be a wiring harness issue or improper wiring installation by manufactuer."

"TIMING BELT TENSIONER - started leaking at only 31K miles. Honda has denied the request to fix this for free of cost. Dealer is demanding $2000 to replace the 6 Cyl Timing Belt Package. Per the link below, this is a common issue with Honda cars (94,000 card recalled so far): [XXX] . I am [XXX] with limited driving needs, and my 2019 Honda Passport Touring is not drivable now. "I own a 2019 Honda Passport. There is a safety concern when it comes to THE IDLE STOP feature. If I do not immediately turn this feature off after starting the vehicle, the car will shut off at a traffic light and stall. It takes up to a minute for the vehicle and operator to register that the vehicle is no longer operable. The vehicle must be manually put into park, restarted, and then put into drive before the vehicle can be driven. This has happened so many times that this stop feature is now destroying my starter and will have to be replaced immediately to avoid being stranded at an intersection or somewhere not safe to exit the vehicle. My 18-year-old daughter had a panic attack, not knowing what to do, and became very upset when she was not able to drive after a light turned green. Vehicles behind her continuously honk at her and drive aggressively around her. The Honda Stop Idle must be listed as a recall immediately to eliminate a potential fatal risk due to a misunderstanding at an intersection. My daughter refuses to drive this vehicle until the feature is repaired. I feel Honda should be held responsible for a feature that is not necessary to operate a vehicle. It's an option that is an inconvenience to the owner/operator. I am looking for this part to be added to a recall so that I can have the part replaced at no cost to me."

"My car has been stalling and not starting back up once turned off. It does it every almost every instance at startup. I can no longer use the auto start/stop feature on my car due to it stalling a few times in the middle of the road. I had to turn the car off and attempt to turn it back on. There is a recall on the fuel pump and fuel injectors but every dealership I have called stated that there are no available fixes while online they state there are available repairs."

"Vehicle has frequent and persistent “Front Camera Fault” warnings appearing on the dashboard, which result in continuous alerts and the disabling of key safety features including the Brake System, Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS), Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), and Road Departure Mitigation (RDM). These warnings occur under all driving conditions, including clear weather and unobstructed roads. The dashboard fault warnings appear on nearly every vehicle start, and all Honda Sensing feature indicators flash continuously while the vehicle is in operation. Because continuous multiple warning lights flash on dashboard, it is difficult to determine which alerts are genuine and which are false. "On 10/16/2025 at 1:30 AM, I was driving home from work on the I-94 freeway in Wisconsin from my work in Franklin, WI to my home in Union Grove, WI. I was driving at the speed limit, which was 70 Mph. I started to hear a ticking sound coming from the engine, and then the check engine light started to flash. The car then began a rapid speed decrease. I started to move from to the right-hand side of the road when the car stopped ticking and the check engine light went out and began to accelerate again. The sudden deceleration and acceleration on a major highway that had many other vehicles around me was very dangerous. I drove the car to my home since it seemed to be working again. I then had it towed to Zeigler Honda in Racine, WI, on the morning of 10/16/2025, to find out what the cause of the incident was. The Authorized Honda dealership (Zeigler) inspected the car and found that the crank bearing for the second cylinder had failed. They said the engine was not repairable. Before this incident, the car had no other problems. All required Honda maintenance was performed on the car, which I purchased new. The week before the incident, I had a routine oil change done at the Zeigler dealership with a passing inspection on the car during the oil change on 10/10/2025."

"At random times, the dashboard will show "BRAKE" repeatedly when there is nothing obstructing the road or any other vehicles nearby. We have also experienced at least a half dozen times when the car will flash that and engage the brakes stopping us in the middle of traffic. The braking is abrupt and will yank you harshly in the seatbelt. I have taken it to the dealership twice and Honda has said nothing can be found in the computer and "the next time it happens to take a pic or video". That is impossible to do and is now happening enough where I considering getting rid of the vehicle but hate to pass that on to another person. When happening in traffic, I cant imagine explaining to emergency response that I was rear ended when the car smashed on the brakes but Honda has no way of confirming that. I dont know what else to do and am grateful to see others are experiencing this and informing you all of this safety issue!"

Also currently has a recall for the fuel pump that they never have the part. Still waiting to see if they are able to get that part. This recall has been there since 12/2021 and they haven’t been able to get the parts."

"It is available for inspection upon request and I’m not sure as what is happening to it. My an others safety was put at risk when my vehicle suddenly lost power an would not accelerate no matter how much I pressed on gas pedal during driving on a highway there was significant hesitation an would go then act up again it has happened intermittently for over a year now . I have brought it to the attention of Honda dealership and the headquarters a nothing has been done. They claim no light no act up for them . Light came on once no codes and message of an emissions system problem as well then was cleared an no fix. I chance it every time I go out because they refuse to do a better job of testing it. I suggested it may be the fuel injectors because many vehicles have had same problems a were recalled but my my vin was not apart of it. Sadly. Seems it’s a uphill battle to be taken seriously in this matter."
